Andrew Goodwin: Grime/Afrobeats

Through research I concentrated on Andrew Goodwin's theory with the focus of my own genre. There are many aspects that differentiate grime music videos  with mainstream hip hop/ rap.

On of the main things that are different is the use of mise en scen, to an extent. Even though both genres  rap about luxury, grime artist usually film in locations reflecting that thy are repping where they come from before and after fame. They use settings in the streets or secluded areas.

On the other hand mainstream artist, like to show their luxury lifestyle- throwing money around, jewellery and the setting is usually in their mansions or private planes which then takes them to another expensive location. Also like mainstream, some of their footage isin their music studio with friends of the artist in the music video, to show its 'all work no play' which reaches out to their fan but  to also show their support system, which allows their fan base to connect.

Local area

Local estate

The use of the local area and the estate in many grime videos is often
amplification which shows where the artists' came from and the people they where around and how it has made them who they are. As they aren't necessary on a international level so would most like have a loyal fan base, I think allows them to connect to their fans, so they know the real them but also because most of their fan base will have come from the same place and would be able to relate. In the music video 'proud' -Young spray ft wretch 32 & chip,  the artist is happy and greets
old time friends and locals, shows they are grateful for this place because it has brought them street knowledge and helped them meet the people that are significant figures in their lives.

With grime the artist are a lot less illustrative with their lyrics or like to carry a narrative. Generally in grime  videos, the artist are surrounded by other  males, for example:

They usually use multiple angles, jump cuts and various camera movement, but never really have long shots or shot reverse shots.

However the song by stormzy 'know me from' broke convention, as he illustrates lyrics, but he still shoots music videos in the gritty streets of London.

"Peng tings on my WhatsApp and my iPhone too"
"Adidas creps, don't ask where I got them"

"The brown skin girls and the light ones too"
